This work begins with hands in clay. Together, we make small landscapes — little pieces of terrain that hold the marks of the people who formed them. Once fired, each piece is backed with a magnet and finished with kangaroo leather.

The individual pieces are gathered in a hand-carved timber vessel beneath a timber landscape hung on the wall above it. Visitors are invited to choose a piece, place it, move it, or return it to the vessel. Over the course of the exhibition, the landscape slowly shifts as each person leaves a small trace of themselves. No single arrangement is final.

Landscapes are never truly still. They are shaped by weather, growth, extraction, care and time. In much the same way, we are shaped by the places we live and by one another. We make our mark, however small, and eventually, we return to the earth ourselves.

Mata is an invitation to build something together, to notice that change is constant, and to remember that we are part of the landscape — not separate from it.
